In 1944, a special
force, trained and led by the now almost legendary General Wingate,
penetrated the Japanese lines in Burma by land and air.
This force, consisting of hand-picked men, most of whom were
volunteers, was divided into columns half a a battalion strong with
supporting groups of Air Force, Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, and
Burma Rifles.
"WE TOO CAN DIE," based on a series of episodes, is woven together
into a story which portrays most vividly the everyday life and the human
drama around those who fought in this campaign.
The Author, Captain Paul Le Butt, M.B.E., Territorial, Commando,
Chindit, saw action with the 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch, in Crete,
Syria, Tobruk, and finally Burma, and it was during his service with the
3hindits that he obtained he material for these stories.
Amongst a host of manuscripts of personal experiences of the war "WE
TOO CAN DIE " lands out as a fine piece of work by a real artist, aware
not only of the war but of the abiding human pathos and drama. |
